Banana Tree Studios offers you a peaceful and supportive work
environment where you can freely express your creative talents.
Those with little or no experience are welcome as well as advanced
students. Ken Macht has over twenty years experience in ceramics.
He will show you how to use the wheel and instruct you in the
exciting technique of wheel throwing. Classes are held in our
fully equipped studio and limited to six to enhance the development
and advancement of each students' throwing skills. You will learn
all aspects of creating your ceramic piece. You will create forms
by hand using slab rolling, coiling and pinching techniques.
Attention is focused on how clay can be shaped, manipulated
and decorated to create both functional and decorative works of
art. You will also experience a Raku firing. This process
focuses on techniques that relate to the ancient Japanese method.
The pieces go into a reduction chamber filled with a combustible
material. The glazing is dependent on the amount of oxygen the
glaze pulls out of the burning material. Classes are held in
8-week sessions in the spring, fall and winter. The cost is $110
for 2 1/2 hours each week. Because classes are small and limited
to 6 students it is necessary to register and send a deposit.

students. Kim McKisson has over ten years experience as a
watercolorist and teacher. Classes are structured and the watercolor
techniques of glazing, wet into wet and dry brush are taught as well
as various techniques for creating texture and masking to save the
white of the paper. Successful watercolors require preplanning
through black and white value studies and this is taught along
with improving drawing skills. Successful paintings also employ
the use of design and composition and these elements are also
taught. Classes are held in 8-week sessions in the spring, fall and winter.

This class is for beginners and those who want to improve their drawing skills.
The course will cover the basics of drawing using fundamental approaches.
The student will learn the logic of structure in design and composition.
Through still-life setups the student will learn to view subjects in a new and
satisfying way. A variety of drawing media will be used. This class will be
taught by Susan Doyle, who recently moved from the Solomon Islands where she
taught art at the international school there for three years.
